TREASURE HUNT

INTRODUCTION

London is not only famous for its attractions like Big Ben and the Tower Bridge but also for its markets, most of which date back to mediaeval times. There is a wide variety of markets in London ranging from the well-known ones such as Camden Lock Market or Portobello Road to the hidden small back street markets like Billingsgate. In this treasure hunt, we are going to learn about them.




QUESTIONS

1. Which famous market was originally a flower one?

2. Where can you buy mainly clothes?

3. Which market was originally a live cattle one?

4. Why is Borough Market famous for?

5. Name three markets where you can buy antiques.

6. Where can you buy the best and cheapest flowers and plants while you hear different east London and Essex accents calling out “Three for a fiver!”?

7. Which famous market was gutted by fire in February 2008?

8. Which one is now the only London-based market dedicated to fish?

THE BIG QUESTION and FINAL PROJECT

  1. Choose some London markets where you would like to go shopping.
  2. Plan a tour to visit them. You can use Google Maps to show the location of the London markets you have chosen. Follow this link for an example.
  3. Explain briefly what you can buy in each market and why they are worth visiting. Please consider their opening days and hours.
  4. In groups of four students, prepare a powerpoint presentation to show your classmates your market tour. Try to convince them that yours is the best tour around London markets.


ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • Answering the questions correctly with your own words. Avoid copying sentences from the web resources provided.
  • Being able to give a clear presentation in class, using ICT resources and organising your time. The presentation should not take longer than 20 minutes.
  • Speaking as fluently and accurately as possible, without reading the notes you have prepared for the presentation.
